Mason at Five

I still can't believe I have a five year old.  It just seems so old.  I am so thankful I get this "bonus" year with him before he starts Kindergarten next year.  He is such a joy to be around.  Four was such a fun year with him.  His personality is just the sweetest.  He is the most loving little boy.  I can't keep count of how many times a day he will hug and kiss me and Matthew and tell us how much he loves us.  I hope and pray that he is always this loving!

I can't talk about Mason without talking about him being a big brother.  He is really the best big brother around.  He is so sweet and protective over Evie.  They do have their moments where they argue, but honestly 90% of the time they play so well together.  He reads to her, plays with her, and bosses her around.  :)  He tells her at least twenty times a day that he loves her and she does the same.  I could sit and watch/listen to them play forever.  It really is the sweetest sound in the world and I feel blessed that I get to be their mom.

He is turning into quite the science kid.  He loves reading and learning about rocks, bugs, gardens, and space.  His new classroom has a science center, so that is what I hear the most about.  He told me all about oxidation the other day!  Every night I read him the Pocket Genius book about bugs.  I never thought I would know so much about insects!

He is also still very much in super heroes.  He and Matthew read all sorts of super hero stories before bed and have started watching Spiderman and Iron Man movies.  He is a different super hero every day.  He is also newly into swords, nerf guns, and his bow and arrow.  I have so many blue darts and arrows around this house.  They turn up everywhere!

I have loved watching him learn about Jesus this year.  He is constantly talking about Him and asking questions that sometimes I am amazed by.  We have always prayed before dinner and before bed, but lately I have heard him praying to himself.  Once was when he was trying to get his Nerf gun "cocked" (it is a little tough for him) and he whispered "Dear God, please let me be able to cock this gun."  Then last week before we went to the doctor for his well visit, I heard him in the back of the car saying "Dear God, please don't let me have to get a shot today."  I absolutely love that he knows if he is scared or wants something that he can pray no matter what.

He loves sports and playing outside.  He is so proud that he can swing all by himself.  He is playing so well in soccer this season too.  I would say his favorite is still baseball though.  I love watching the determination he has on the field and how hard he tries.  I hope he always loves playing sports!

He has turned into such a big boy.  He asks me to lay out his clothes every night, and when he wakes up he gets completely dressed and sometimes even makes his bed before coming into my room.  He pretty much bathes completely on his own, brushes and flosses his teeth, and can do a perfect part in his hair.  He is like a little old man getting ready for bed!

We have had very few tantrums this year.  He is still a pretty good whiner when he wants to be, and sometimes doesn't want to listen the first (or fifth) time we ask him to do something, but over all he is a well behaved, well-mannered little boy.

He is still very sensitive and doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings.  He got upset awhile ago because I told someone that Evie was a better eater than him.  He took it literally that I thought Evie was "better" than him and he just cried and cried.  He also got his feelings hurt when he overheard me say that he was shy.  I have to watch what I say because he is always listening and always literal!  Sweet boy!

He is scared of the dark.  He has to have his door wide open, two night lights on, his dream lite, and the hall light on to be able to fall asleep.  He wakes up at least once a night and comes in our room to check on us.  He will usually give me a kiss and say I love you, then go get back in bed.  If he goes to Matthew's side of the bed though, he wants Matthew to get up and come tuck him back in.  Glad he lets me stay in bed.  :)

Some favorite foods are: pizza, chick fil a, McDonalds, spaghetti (really any kind of pasta), grapes, strawberries, raspberries, yogurt, applesauce, green beans, chicken, jelly sandwiches, toast, Chinese noodles and Mexican food

I can't wait to see what the next year has in store and to watch him become a big brother for the second time!
