Big Boy Bed

Last night, Mason slept in his new room in his new big boy bed for the first time. He is moving rooms and the baby will be in his old room. I've been putting off the transition for a few weeks and decided we just needed to do it. I want him to be used to it by the time the baby gets here, and not feel like the baby is taking over his room. He has always been a good sleeper, and has never tried to climb out of his crib, so a big part of me was scared that would change once he saw he could get out of the twin bed. We've also been really lucky in the fact that he will play in his crib and not cry when he wakes up or when we put him down. He will sing and play for as long as we leave him in the mornings before we go get him out. I was hoping the same would be true for the new bed!

We've been talking about his new room for awhile and showing him his new bed, so he knew it was in there. After his Sunday nap I took his bumpers and mattress out of the crib and put them away so he could see that his bed was "broken". He wasn't too sure about it at first, but we just went right ahead with his normal bedtime routine. After bath, instead of taking him to the old room to get dressed, we took him to his new room. He kind of got upset, but then was over it. We got him dressed and let him dance to hokey pokey and then Matthew got in bed with him to read his books. Again, he wasn't too sure about this because he is used to reading his books in the rocking chair. Once Matthew was done with books, he started crying that he wanted me to rock him, so I just sat in bed and held him and swayed with him. This seemed to satisfy him and after a few minutes, I tucked him in and he was completely fine. We told him that he doesn't get out of his bed unless Mommy or Daddy comes to get him. He slept all night and when he woke up this morning, he just sat and played like he normally would. I went in to get him and he said "I did it, Mommy!" and was so proud of himself.

I must say I had a MUCH harder time with this! Of course I want him to grow up, but part of me was so sad that he is old enough to be sleeping in a big bed. I cried off and on all evening, especially while I was taking his crib apart. It seems like yesterday he was sleeping in his crib for the first time. I guess I can chalk it up to hormones! :)

As I am typing this, he is napping for the first time in the bed. He isn't asleep yet, but hasn't gotten out of it either. I hope this transition continues to go smoothly!

His last time sleeping in a crib (yes, I realize I am WAY too sentimental!)

Dancing before bed
He loves his Daddy to read to him

Good Morning, Mommy! (he woke up with his head at the foot of the bed)
Such a big boy!
We put the rail down so that he could climb out, and he wanted Lovey to climb out too!
