Last weekend we went to Lubbock to see Tech play Texas. Since it is 550 miles from Shreveport to Lubbock, we decided to break up the drive. We drove to Ennis on Thursday and left with Granna at 7:30 Friday morning. We got to Lubbock around 2:00 and met Lezlee and Joel and Lezlee's parents. It was my first time there in 4 or 5 years. Aunt Sarah is a Junior at Tech, so we got to see her house and meet her roommates. The first thing we did was go to Red Raider Outfitter to get some new Tech shirts. Friday night we went to eat at Cracker Barrel with Sarah and Derek and then went back to the hotel to hang out.
On Saturday we woke up and spent some time at the hotel tailgating and then went to lunch at Spanky's. Spanky's is a must if you are near campus. They are known for their fried cheese, and oh my goodness is it good! Then we walked to campus to get pictures at the seal and at the Will Rogers and Soapsuds statue. After walking around for awhile (it was SO hot!) we went back to the hotel to let Mason take a nap and did some more tailgating. I love seeing so many people out waiting for the big game. We only let Mason sleep for about an hour and then we walked over to Raider Gate. Raider Gate is a gameday tradition with live music, food, and all sorts of entertainment. Mason loved the music and watching the cheerleaders. We also got to see the Raider Walk, which is when all the players walk to the stadium before the game. It was really cool to see all of the things that I used to do in college 10 years ago through the eyes of my son. I never would have thought back then that I would be pushing my son around campus! It would be awesome if he chose to go there one day since so many people in mine and Matthew's family have graduated from there.
Donna was nice enough to keep Mason at the hotel so that we could go to the game without him. We had a blast even though we didn't play all that great and ended up losing. We got up on Sunday and headed for the long drive home. We made a stop in Abilene to go eat lunch with my parents and let Mason run around for awhile. He really did great overall and it was a fun weekend.
Tech will always be special to me because that is where Lez and I met the first week of freshman year and we have been best friends ever since. We lived together for 3 years and I think there was even a semester that we lived together, had every class together, and worked together! I can't wait til next year when her baby will be with us at the game!
Ready for game day
Yummy! Fried cheese, fried pickles and Miller Lite!

Tech grads: me, Granna, and Sarah
We've been practicing get your Guns Up and Mason finally got it!
Here is Will Rogers and his horse, Soapsuds. It is a tradition at Tech that the Saddle Tramps wrap it in red crepe paper on game day. Another bit of triva: The horse's rear is facing towards Texas A&M!
We got to meet the Masked Rider
And we got to meet Raider Red
We also ran into Sean. small world!
Before kick off
the final score :(
great post! I love all of the pictures!
ReplyDeleteCasey. I love a fellow Texas football fan (even though I will be routing for Baylor when we play yall) and I LOVE Mason doing the gun thing with his hands. Ella Grace already knows how to spell BAYLOR and at least once a week asks about going to see the baylor bears...we house our mascots on campus in a big bear pit.
